According to a top official on Wednesday, Indian applications and games experienced a 200 percent rise in active monthly users on Google Play last year compared to 2019.

“Indian applications and games have piqued the interest of both consumers and investors,” said Purnima Kochikar, Google’s vice president of Play Partnerships.

She was speaking at the opening of Appscale Academy, a joint venture between the firm and the MeitY Startup Hub, which is part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and aims to boost innovation in the Indian app industry.

“Apps and games developed by Indian firms are gaining a worldwide following. Ludo King, for example, has become one of the most popular games worldwide.” Kochikar continued.

Users outside India spent 150 percent more time on Indian firms’ applications and games in 2021 than they did in 2019, she noted.

Google has developed the Appscale Academy to find and support promising Indian entrepreneurs and help them grow into successful worldwide enterprises in order to capitalise on this growing opportunity.

In a statement, Jeet Vijay, CEO of MeitY Startup Hub, stated, “Our cohort of 100 Indian entrepreneurs is guaranteeing that a homegrown answer for many of our everyday, important, and unique requirements is currently just an app away.”

Following a screening process that assessed their ideas and creativity, product quality, product scalability, and talent diversity, the businesses were picked from over 400 applicants.

These companies will be trained through a customised curriculum designed to help them drive high-quality apps for a global market over the course of the six-month programme, which will include sessions on UX design, business model and monetization strategies, international expansion best practises, and data safety and security practises, among other topics.

BitClass (a live learning platform), Farmyng Club (a social platform for farmers to improve their livelihood), Kutuki (a preschool learning app), Sunita’s Makerspace (an innovation community), Stamurai (a platform offering affordable and high-quality speech therapy), LearnVern (a job-oriented skilling app offering courses in regional languages), and Vivasayam are among the startups in the cohort (an app promoting organic farming).
