Google is making its Workforce suite of office tools available to everyone with a Google account, in an attempt to boost its market share and compete with Microsoft.

A new individual membership option, upgrades to Google Meet, and security and privacy features to enable hybrid workplaces were also revealed by the search giant.

The world is transitioning to a mixed workplace. Some people, such as those in the United States, are returning to work, while others, such as those in India, are continuing to work remotely. In an interview with ET, Javier Soltero, vice president and general manager of Google Workspace, said that the same technology tools should be made available to everyone to ensure that no one is disadvantaged.

“Video is a key component in workplace communications and cooperation in the United States and throughout the world,” said Soltero. “You have this imbalance and possible unfairness as soon as some individuals start working remotely while others return to the office.”

Because the user experience should be the same regardless of work location, Soltero stated the firm chose to make the product available to all users and upgrade it to satisfy hybrid work environment demands.

In India, Google Meet users spent 45 times more time on the video conferencing service in the first quarter of 2021 than they did the previous year. ICICI Prudential, NPCI, Voltas, and Muthoot Groups have recently joined the company’s customer list.

Google has over 3 billion users in the consumer, business, and education sectors. They’ll get access to Gmail, Chat, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Meet, as well as the rest of the Google Workspace suite.

In a separate interview, Bikram Singh Bedi, managing director of Google Cloud India Region, said the epidemic has been a godsend for the IT industry and has hastened all organizations’ digitization journeys.

“Over the previous year, all productivity applications have accelerated significantly and are continuing to accelerate. Even small firms are going digital, according to Bedi. To meet the rising demand and expand its reach, the firm is focusing on developing its partner network—resellers, software providers, and system integrators.
